From 1 September, dropping someone off at Skopje airport becomes a task with a limited number of attempts. The street in front of the terminal building remains reserved for a free 10-minute stop to drop off and pick up passengers - but only once in any 24 hours, per vehicle.

If the same number plate turns up a second time on the same day, the free ten-minute stop no longer applies. Enforcement will run through an authentication system with automatic number-plate recognition.

TAV's explanation

"The change is aimed at maintaining an uninterrupted flow of vehicles and providing safe conditions for all passengers, visitors and drivers. Automatic number-plate recognition will allow us to manage access efficiently, particularly during peak-load periods with increased traffic frequency," TAV Macedonia said.

The stated goal is to prevent abuse and reduce congestion in front of the terminal.

The argument has grounds - anyone who has driven to Skopje airport at the height of summer knows what that street looks like when a dozen vehicles sit there for more than ten minutes waiting for someone still stuck in security.

Where you go if you need more than one stop

Drivers who need a longer stay, or who have to reach the airport several times on the same day, are left with the main car park in front of the terminal, with 1,200 spaces for cars and six for buses.

The prices there have been known since January 2024, when they went up: 100 denars for one hour, 150 for two, 200 for three. Over three hours rose from 250 to 300 denars, four to six hours is 400 denars, six to eight is 500, and eight to 24 hours is 1,000 denars instead of the previous 850. Parking for three to five days costs 3,500 denars, five to seven days 4,500, and every additional day another 400.

Who will really feel the rule

The big losers here are not the people who were abusing the street. They are the families who see one passenger off and meet another on the same day, and the taxi drivers and private operators who by the nature of their work come several times a day.

For them the new arithmetic is simple: a second arrival means 100 denars minimum, even if the stop lasts three minutes.

Technologically, the solution is modern and it works. The question TAV did not answer is whether there is an exemption for the operators who do this for a living, or whether everyone will pay the same price for an organisational problem they did not create.
