US Deploys New Long-Range Missile in Combat Against Iran for the First Time

The US Army used the PrSM (Precision Strike Missile) in combat against Iran for the first time, confirmed by Central Command Admiral Brad Cooper. The system provides "unparalleled deep strike capability," he said.

PrSM operates at a range of 60 to 500 kilometers, significantly exceeding conventional artillery capabilities. The system uses an inertial navigation system augmented with GPS guidance and carries a warhead with fragmentation-explosive power designed for large or hardened targets.

Developed by Lockheed Martin, PrSM is launched from M142 HIMARS or M270 MLRS platforms. The compact design allows each launch platform to carry two missiles instead of one. Development began in 2016 to replace the aging ATACMS system with improved precision and reduced radar signature.

Development of the system became possible after the Trump administration withdrew from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty with Russia in 2019, which had previously limited ground-based missiles to 500 km range. Although PrSM cannot carry nuclear warheads, critics warn that it sets a troubling precedent for conventional systems with extended range.
