Egypt says it found the drone's debris. It does not say whose it is. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly confirmed today at a press conference in El Alamein that the authorities recovered parts of the aircraft used in the attack on a gas carrier at the port of Damietta and that they are analysing them to establish its origin. No group has claimed responsibility.
„We found the drone's remains after the attack on the ship at the port of Damietta and we are conducting a security analysis,” Madbouly said. Egypt, he stressed, will stick to „the facts, not to guesswork”. The government responded through several channels, including security measures involving the Defence Ministry and the intelligence services.
That is the vocabulary of a state that does not want to name anyone. And it has reasons.
From Cairo to Washington, two very different sentences
While the Egyptian prime minister asks everyone to wait for the analysis, US President Donald Trump already has a culprit. Asked whether Iran is behind the attack, he told reporters at the White House it was „a little more of the same”. Then he added: „We're going to hit them very hard because now it's our turn to hit them. And they know it's coming.”
So: facts in Cairo, an announcement of retaliation in Washington - for the same event, on the same day. Egypt has the entire investigation and names nobody. The United States has not published a single piece of evidence and is already announcing the response.
What is known: two gas carriers caught fire at the port. The blaze broke out the previous day and was brought under control. The British maritime security company Ambrey reported that the attack targeted an American-owned floating liquefied natural gas storage unit sailing under the flag of the Marshall Islands. State Information Minister Diaa Rashwan rejected speculation that the case would be swept under the carpet and promised the results would be published as soon as the investigation is complete.
Madbouly also stressed that the attack did not disrupt Egypt's energy system and that the authorities activated alternative options for uninterrupted supply. That is a sentence written for the markets, not for the public. When a state first explains that the gas is flowing and only then who hit the ships, the order tells you what the priority is.
The Balkans knows this mechanism by heart: an incident nobody admits to, two sides accusing each other through the media, and an investigation whose findings arrive after the decision has already been taken. The question is not who launched the drone - Egypt will find that out. The question is whether the response will wait for it to.
