Montenegrin police arrested businessman Aleksandar "Aco" Djukanovic, brother of former president and prime minister Milo Djukanovic. The arrest came after hours of searches at his apartment in central Podgorica and at the family home in the village of Rastoci near Niksic.
During the search, authorities found three firearms, police equipment and body armour. The operation was conducted pursuant to the main state indictment in Podgorica. The search lasted from approximately 1 p.m. until the evening, during which time police forcibly entered part of the premises. The arrest took place shortly after.
Aco Djukanovic is among the wealthiest businessmen in Montenegro, and his entire fortune was accumulated during the period when his brother ran the country – first as prime minister for three decades, then as president. The investigative network OCCRP estimated his assets at approximately 167 million dollars, and he is a majority shareholder of Prva Banka.
The arrest comes shortly after Milo Djukanovic himself was questioned before the Special State Prosecutor's office in an investigation into alleged illegal enrichment of securities worth up to 225,000 euros before the Anti-Corruption Agency.
This case is part of a broader pressure on the Djukanovic family following the loss of power in 2020. The official Montenegrin authorities have not yet issued a detailed statement on the legal grounds for the arrest.
