In a major police operation in central Podgorica, Montenegrin authorities detained businessman Aleksandar "Aco" Đukanović, brother of Montenegro's long-serving former president Milo Đukanović.
Police surrounded a building on "Vuk Stefanović Karadžić" street in central Podgorica, which houses both Aco Đukanović's apartment and the premises of Prva Banka – a financial institution in his ownership. Searches were also conducted at the family home in the Rastoći neighbourhood, in Nikšić, and at several other locations.
During the searches, authorities seized three firearms, police equipment and a protective vest. Officials have not yet disclosed the specific reasons for the detention, nor which investigations the proceedings are connected to.
Aco Đukanović is one of the wealthiest individuals in Montenegro – his fortune is estimated at several hundred million euros. Following the electoral defeat of the political movement led by his brother Milo in 2020, Aco Đukanović reportedly moved to Luxembourg.
The detention comes amid intensified institutional pressure on the Đukanović clan since the family lost its political influence. The Special State Prosecution has intensified investigations into illegally acquired wealth and corruption allegations against the former political establishment.
