Faeces in Gostivar's water, 22 fires in one night, a church with no sign, sewage after decades

The water in Gostivar was contaminated with faeces, and the argument is about everything else

The fact is not in dispute: the water in Gostivar was contaminated with faeces. Everything happening around that fact is politics. Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski dismissed the criticism as political strategy and asked why SDSM never mentions the mayor of Gostivar. SDSM replied with mockery about his official trip to Belgium. Both statements are well written and neither contains a date. And the dates are the whole point: there is a report that established the water was contaminated, there is the day it was written, there is the day it reached the authorities - and there is the stretch between those two days in which people kept drinking. Three people have been detained and the investigation is ongoing. That is the only real thing in the entire story.

Twenty-two fires put out in one night, six new ones by morning

The country is burning on several fronts at once. In the morning tally on 16 August - six active fires, one contained and 22 extinguished overnight. It is burning in Studenichani, Makedonski Brod, Veles and Zelenikovo, Jegunovce, Krushevo. Not one fire that slipped out of control, but an entire map. At Vrzhale the fire is on ground a ground crew cannot reach, so the only option is from the air - and the air capacity is limited, split between several fronts and dependent on the weather. The crews who put out 22 fires in one night have earned that number. The question is not for them. It is why every season starts with the same improvisation: how many aircraft were operational before summer began, rather than after the first forest had burned.

The good number for inflation and the bad number for the denar

Annual inflation in July is 2.3 percent, below the European average. That is true. The purchasing power of the denar has fallen by around 30 percent since 2022 on basic goods - what cost 1,000 denars then costs 1,300 today. That is also true. Inflation of 2.3 percent describes how fast prices are climbing now; the thirty percent describes how far they have already climbed. One is speed, the other is distance, and the household budget feels the distance. Jewellery and watches rose most, but the third item on the list is no footnote: preschool and primary education up 30 percent in a single year, which lands on one specific group - families with small children.

A brawl a few steps from the police station

Six men fought in the street in Kochani, right next to the police station. Not in some remote neighbourhood where a patrol takes half an hour to arrive. Four have been detained, and the interior ministry has announced an internal review of how the officers acted. Announcing it is the right move. The open question is whether anyone will ever read its findings.

The church on every promotional brochure, without a single sign

The photographs from Lake Mavrovo spread on their own: people in swimwear climbing the wall of the submerged church of St. Nicholas. The post that triggered the reaction did not take the easy route - it states explicitly that the problem is not the tourists, but that nobody tells them where they have arrived. What is being asked for is not expensive: signs, warnings and the occasional patrol. The church is one of the most photographed spots in the country and appears on every promotional item for Mavrovo, yet carries not one inscription saying what it is. If the building is good enough for a promotional video, it is hard to explain why it is not important enough for a single inspection visit during the season.

The plan exists, the measurement does not

The same pattern repeats through the day in the smaller stories. Jegunovce carried out a third round of mosquito spraying - the plan exists, the measurement of its effect does not. Lake Ohrid is getting 1.6 million trout, but if an endemic species has to be topped up from outside for decades, something is consuming it faster than it regenerates; alongside the number of fish released, the number of fines issued would be worth publishing too. At Lojane the crossing has no barrier because the authorities' criterion is frequency rather than visibility - the train sounds its horn instead of having a gate. And in 2026 Idrizovo is only now getting a sewage system: 1,478 metres and fifty million denars, inside a figure of 1,200 construction sites across the country that is missing its second number - how many of them are finished.

When the system works, it works through people, not equipment

Not everything failed. A man with both shins broken above Malo Ezero on Pelister was carried out within an hour and a half of the call reaching the doctor, from terrain no vehicle can enter. That is an operation that worked. But it worked because mountain rescue here is done by people who fit it around another job - a different kind of fragility from the one in the paragraphs above, but fragility all the same.

Two inspectors for an entire system

SDSM alleges a purge of head teachers who are not party loyalists; the education ministry rejects it as manipulation. Between the two statements stands one institution that has the numbers and does not publish them: the Education Inspectorate. When the body whose job is to measure stays silent about its own figures, the dispute stays a dispute between two press releases - which is exactly what suits both sides.

The lighter part of the day

Away from all of it, Djokovic revealed after his defeat in Cincinnati that he has lived for twenty years with a condition that causes him problems in humidity and heat - and said so days before going after a twenty-fifth Grand Slam title. For twenty years he was told he was exaggerating whenever he called for a doctor. Sometimes the man who looks like he is complaining simply knew something the rest did not.
