A New Kindergarten, Kokiche, in Trubarevo for 60 Kids: Good News, No Caveats - But Let It Be the Start of a Series, Not a One-Off Ceremony

In Trubarevo, a neighbourhood that rarely makes the news, a new kindergarten has opened - "Kokiche". From 1 July it will care for 60 children, and the staff who will work there have already been hired. Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski attended the opening.

The investment comes to 47 million denars, provided by the Municipality of Gazi Baba. This is the third kindergarten the municipality has built; another is planned to open in Indzhikovo in September, and a fourth is going up between Keramidnica and Madzhari. For families in these neighbourhoods, where kindergarten places have been a luxury for years, this isn't politics - it's the difference between being able to work and having to stay home with the child.

New kindergartens are news that doesn't call for scepticism - they're exactly what the state is supposed to do. Sixty new places mean sixty families with a lighter load, and that's good news with no caveats.

Still, one kindergarten doesn't settle the story. Waiting lists for childcare in Skopje remain long, and opening a building is the easy part - the harder part is keeping it good, equipped and staffed with enough teachers for years to come. Let "Kokiche" be the start of a series, not a lone ceremony for the cameras. The children of Trubarevo deserve a place that will keep working long after the ribbon-cutting day.
