From Monday, New Parking Rules in the Old Town of Ohrid: Three Streets for Residents Only

From Monday, 13 July, a new parking regime begins in the old part of Ohrid - and on three of the city's most famous streets only those who live there will park for free.

The new rules cover the streets "Ilindenska", "Kosta Abrash" and "Tsar Samoil", announced the public company that manages the car parks. The parking spaces on these streets will be free to use only for resident inhabitants with the appropriate permit, while different conditions will apply to everyone else.

The decision has its logic - the narrow cobbled streets in the old town were, for centuries, not built for cars, and in the summer season Ohrid drowns in vehicles. But the measure also raises a question every Ohrid local is probably already asking: will this really make life easier for locals, or will it create new queues, jams and quarrels over every free spot? The beauty of the old town lies precisely in the fact that it wasn't tailored for cars - the question is whether the city will find a way to preserve that beauty without punishing those who live in it.
