Tuam: children's bones are coming out of the ground

The heaviest news of the day doesn't come from Macedonia but from Ireland, and it deserves to stand first. At the former home for unwed mothers in Tuam, another 22 bodies have been found, bringing the number of children's corpses in the septic pit to 99. Half a century of silence, and the apologies arrived only after the witnesses were already dead. This is not an accident - this is a system that knew, and waited for the bones to speak for themselves.

Missiles on Kyiv, a drone over Romania

The war reminded everyone again that there is no safe distance. Russian missiles hit a weapons expo near Kyiv and took at least 10 lives - and Ukraine is opening an investigation against its own, too, over who gathered people outdoors in a country under daily attack. At the same time, Romania shot down a drone over its own territory for the first time, finally crossing the line it had tolerated for years.

Ohrid was saved on paper, not on the ground

At home, the loudest figure is 4,847 illegal buildings in Ohrid and 456 demolition orders sitting in a drawer. UNESCO once again bought time - a five-year deadline instead of the blacklist - but the plan is familiar: all that's missing is a bulldozer that never comes. The same logic of non-enforcement repeats all day long.

Same bus, higher price

When the state did do something, it did it more expensively. The re-run bus tender is a million euros pricier - the same Ikarus, a higher price. That difference could have fixed the air conditioning on the old vehicles where it hits 45 degrees. Meanwhile, the Idadija clinic went into scaffolding for 31 million denars, while branches downed by the storm sit uncleared for a third day as the same authorities advise you not to park under trees.

Lake Mladost closed once again

Summer brings its own routine of failure too: Lake Mladost is closed for the third summer running because of cyanobacteria, and SDSM is now demanding tests of the taps in the villages around Veles as well. The problem has been known for years - the solution, as in Ohrid, is still waiting.

Political arithmetic: one more MP for VMRO

In parliament, the new minister without portfolio arrived on 67 votes, but the story is in the numbers: the Turks' party crossed from DUI to the ruling side, and VMRO's majority grew to 59 MPs. In parallel, Mucunski is announcing a positive impulse with Bulgaria, but he repeats that the red lines on identity stay - there is movement, but no concessions.

Money: oil above 100, gold falling, rentals under the microscope

The markets had a nervous day. Oil jumped above 100 dollars and Wall Street sank into the red under a fresh inflation scare, while even gold fell before stabilising around 4,000 dollars. At home, the tax authority put summer landlords under the microscope - income from apartments must be declared, and the question of why the checks arrive only now stays open.

Crime: a scam as old as the Balkans

The oldest Balkan scam is up and running again, this time with an arrest: a man from Kavadarci promised a foreign passport for 400 euros and squeezed out 9,000, before he was caught taking another 2,000 in marked euros. In Štip, meanwhile, two men posed as police officers at the door of an 85-year-old woman - the robbery was stopped by an attentive neighbour, not the state. And in Kavadarci, a verdict of 10 years each came down for the deadly brawl outside a casino.

The lighter side of the day

Not everything was heavy. Snow fell on Šar Planina in the middle of July - while some were swimming, the peaks turned white, and Macedonia had both summer and winter in a single day. And the City is offering a free panoramic tour of Skopje as it looked before the 1963 earthquake, not to mourn, but so it isn't forgotten. On the pitch, Klopp is taking over Germany through 2030, and at home a new season in Macedonian football begins.

If the day has a common thread, it's in the heavier part: institutions know how to announce, to inspect and to tender, but not to carry through. The demolition orders sit, the branches lie there, the lake closes for a third summer - and the bill for non-enforcement, as always, is paid by whoever has no lobby.
