From August 2026, the new British ambassador to Macedonia will be Maja Sivaganam. She replaces Matthew Lawson, who has held the post since 2022. Sivaganam has 25 years of diplomatic experience and this is her first posting as the head of a mission. That means two things - experience, and London's interest in Skopje at a moment when geopolitics shifts every week.
Sivaganam built her profile in specific places. She served in the British embassy in Ankara - a country that's diplomatically far from easy. She was deputy director of the European Political Community summit, held in London last year. Those aren't postings for people on a „tourist schedule". Those are postings for diplomats London is grooming for more. Skopje is now such a junction.
Sivaganam will be the second woman in this position, after Rachel Galloway. That's not an irrelevant detail at a time when British diplomacy is making a conscious effort towards gender parity at senior diplomatic posts. It means the decision isn't accidental - it's part of the Foreign Office's strategy for the region.
What can Skopje expect? First, continuity of the British approach - pro-European orientation, support for accession processes, and steady reminders about the rule of law. When Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski has his first meeting with her, those three points will almost certainly be on the agenda. London doesn't play diplomatic games with Skopje - but London asks for certain things, and those things shape the tone of the conversation.
In a Balkan context, immunologically speaking, ambassadors with 25 years of experience don't get sent to provincial posts. They get sent to central ones. That's a signal Skopje rarely receives - that a foreign government still considers Macedonia to matter. The question is whether Skopje will accept the signal or sidestep it. The historical record shows uneven responses.
