Skopje Under Special Traffic Regime for Zadusnica - Four Cemeteries, One-Way Routes, Possibly Continuing Into the Weekend

Skopje has been under a special traffic regime since 6 a.m. on May 29 - for the day of Zadusnica. The police have imposed one-way routes and controlled circulation around the four municipal cemeteries: Butel, Kamnik, Drachevo and Gjorche Petrov.

The most complex changes are at Butel. Vehicles heading to the cemetery go along Butelska, then left onto Aleksandar Urdarevski, then left onto Boca Ivanova - up to the entrance. On the way back - Boca Ivanova, through the roundabout on Butelska, left again, then right onto Kemal Sejfula. The route is clear, if you read it carefully before setting off.

The police announced that the special regime may continue on Saturday and Sunday too if a mass build-up appears. Citizens are urged to follow the on-site officers' instructions and not to drive contrary to what's been laid out.

Zadusnica is the day every Macedonian family goes to the grave. It's a tradition neither a mayor nor the police can restructure. Facing growing traffic, the municipalities deal with it at the last moment through temporary measures - and that's how it has been for decades. Might it be time for a longer-term solution? Maybe - but not today.
