When an entire royal household boards a plane just to sit in the stands, that is no longer cheering - it is protocol. Felipe VI, Letizia and their two daughters, Leonor and Sofía, are travelling abroad together for the first time on an official appearance, and the destination is the World Cup football final against Argentina at the „MetLife“ stadium in New Jersey.
Until now, the young princesses went abroad one at a time - Leonor to study in Britain, Sofía on a visit to Portugal. This is the first time the whole family steps out as a single block. And here is the detail that says everything: they flew on separate flights. Not for comfort, but because of the succession protocol - if something goes wrong, the dynasty must not lose all its heirs at once.
This is a scene the Balkans read without a translation. A crown that minds the order of succession even on the plane, a crown that turns a single football final into a state visit - that is no accident, but a way to keep power visible precisely where everyone is looking.
The Spanish public immediately remembered 2010, when a very small Leonor and an even smaller Sofía were photographed lifting the World Cup trophy. If Spain wins again tonight, the palace is already preparing the same welcome. The story repeats itself, only the children have grown up - and are now part of the institution, not just grandchildren on the pitch.
Sofía, meanwhile, has her own official trip in September, this time to Paris. Slowly but methodically, both daughters are being woven into the machinery of the royal house - every appearance is a step, every photograph a message about who will be trusted with the next role.
The question that remains is not whether they will cheer well, but what it means when a monarchy travels as a set and brands it as a historic moment. Football is the excuse, visibility is the point - and that is a game every power, crowned or not, knows well.
