When the US president publicly thanks Putin and Xi Jinping, then aims his sharpest words at his own ally - it's worth stopping to listen. Donald Trump said in an interview that Moscow and Beijing played a significant role in reaching the deal with Iran, admitting the agreement wasn't won by American pressure alone. An admission that's rarely heard out loud in Washington.
But Trump aimed his fiercest message not at Tehran, but at Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu. „He is a very complicated man and, honestly, he should be very grateful to us for this. Because if Iran had had a nuclear weapon, Israel wouldn't exist within two hours," Trump said - one of his most direct criticisms of Netanyahu since the crisis began.
And there's the catch. Iran's Supreme National Security Council confirmed the deal, insisting the war must permanently end on all fronts, including there. Netanyahu, meanwhile, made clear that Israel will continue military operations against Hezbollah and that it doesn't consider itself bound by the terms of the agreement. In other words - the deal exists on paper, but one side is already calling it into question.
The signing of the memorandum is set for June 19 in Switzerland. Until then, the whole world will be watching whether the deal struck by the biggest powers will be wrecked by the smallest, but most stubborn player in the equation. The Balkans know this dynamic: the big powers cut deals over everyone's heads, and those who think they have nothing to lose are most often the ones who wreck the deal. The question is who pays the price if this one falls apart too.
