Vučić calls the masses for Vidovdan, opposition says: that means July elections

Vučić is planning massive SNS rallies in Belgrade and Novi Sad for the end of June, around Vidovdan. "That will be a time for major decisions," the Serbian president announced - without specifying which decisions, or for whom. The opposition already knows the answer: July elections.

Miroslav Aleksić, leader of Serbia's People's Movement, stated that they have "serious indications" that early elections are being prepared - gathered both from the ground and from international sources. Pro-government media are already examining scenarios: parliamentary, presidential, or combined elections.

Context matters. Student protests in Serbia have been running for a year now - following the Novi Sad tragedy in 2024. Students are demanding elections to restore legitimacy to the political system. So why is Vučić choosing this moment to flex muscle with mass rallies? It appears the electoral move is closer than official Belgrade admits.

On the Balkans, a government's "major decision" and the opposition's "election preparations" almost always mean the same thing. The difference is only in who names it first.
