Pelister is under control, but nobody knows whether anyone was hurt

After three days of fire, Pelister is under control - and then the second problem started. The park's director says two of the crews were injured during the night. The director of the Protection and Rescue Directorate denies it. Both men are talking about the same night and the same people, and their versions do not differ by a shade - they differ on whether someone is injured at all. When the state cannot agree with itself on something this verifiable, it is hard to believe it will agree on responsibility. Seven more fires are burning across the country at the same time.

148 empty schools, and the word that covers it

In 2016, 23,266 children started first grade. This year 14,952 did. The difference is 8,300 first-graders, and the consequence is 148 empty schools and 433 fewer classes. The Ministry calls this optimisation - a word that describes how the system adjusts to the emptiness, not how it closes it. In Bitola the picture is even more concrete: two schools are running for one child each, three are going dormant, and 188 first-graders on the Interior Ministry's lists never showed up at all. The municipality says enrolment is still open. The question is why anyone has to wait until the end of September to find out how many children are even left.

307,187 empty flats, and a price that refuses to hear about them

The census found 307,187 unoccupied flats. That did not bring the price down, because the empty flats are where there is no work, and the buyers are where there are no flats. The result is that a 60-square-metre flat in Skopje became nearly 29,000 euros more expensive in a single year. The census figure and the market figure describe the same country, but they describe two different states.

There is a limit on party money, there is no penalty

The Anti-Corruption Commission opened the question itself and found holes in the party financing law. There is a cap on membership fees, but there is no penalty if that cap is broken. The Commission is even asking parties to submit their accounts to it - which means that until now they did not have to. A limit without a sanction is not a limit; it is a recommendation written in the tone of a law.

Tenders that collapsed, and a bridge being paid for

Skopje signed a contract for 150 electric buses worth 51 million euros, after two annulled tenders that nobody explained. The first 30 are due by the end of December, but the real test is not the delivery - it is whether the chargers in Avtokomanda and Gjorche Petrov will be ready when the buses land. In the same budget revision, the city is setting aside 420 million denars for a new bridge towards Saraj and announcing that its liabilities have fallen by 60 million euros. Both the growth and the drop in debt come from the mayor's own announcements. That does not make them false, but it does mean nobody independent has checked them yet.

Shtip without water, with a number that explains everything

Shtip was left without water because turbidity hit 400 NTU and the filter station can process 50. One storm in a neighbouring region was enough. The Shtip wells that worked for half a century have been left to rot, and that is the only sentence in the entire party shouting match worth remembering.

Sheep pox, fuel, and one night in Kumanovo

Sheep pox killed 196 sheep, and the state killed 7,316. For every animal that died of the disease, roughly 37 were culled by the state to stop it, and 50 of the 63 outbreak sites are in eastern Macedonia. Diesel fell by 6.50 denars and still stayed more expensive than petrol, while the word average hides the fact that petrol drivers are paying more than yesterday. In Kumanovo, meanwhile, someone fired from a moving moped at three in the morning - no injuries, no perpetrators, and a report ending with the sentence we read after every case like this.

The Staro Nagorichane trial

Women aged 87 and 83 testified in court about what the defendant did to them. The prosecution argues he is fully accountable, the defence is asking for a security measure, and the experts wrote that the risk of repetition is high - which means even prison does not remove what the expert report describes. The same day, in a staff room at the Skopje clinics, an unknown man attacked the woman who walked in on him. Police arrested him in under an hour. The other question is how he got in at all.

And in sport, an evening worth remembering

Dimitrijevikj recorded the first triple-double for Macedonia, and the win over Vienna was no ordinary one. Chupikj brought Vardar back to the elite, Alkaloid went through on a 6:0 run, and the handball women took their first win in Taranto. In football Messi walked away, Liverpool paid 106 million, and a ten-man Tikvesh took a point off Vardar.

The heavier part of the day has one common line running through it: the institutions produce precise numbers - 400 NTU, 148 schools, 307,187 flats, a cap on membership fees - and not one of those numbers obliges anyone. Precision is not the same thing as accountability, and the gap between them is the only thing genuinely being measured.
