Four young people died on the Šabac-Ruma motorway in Serbia after a driver in a Ford entered the wrong way and slammed at around 130 km/h into a Golf carrying four. The Ford driver, from Belgrade, died on the spot. So did three of the four passengers in the other car.

The only survivor - a 22-year-old man - was rushed to the emergency centre in Belgrade. Doctors are fighting for his life.

The crash is a textbook example of how catastrophically a single wrong-way entry can end. The driver didn't change direction - he kept going at full speed. No word yet on the cause: a technical fault, a medical emergency, or something else - the investigation is ongoing.

Serbia regularly logs traffic tragedies on its motorway network. This one, with five victims, is among the worst of the recent period.
