As part of the „Bright Municipality of Ilinden" initiative, the municipality is pressing on with modernising its public lighting. Over the past period, new modern LED street lighting has gone up at several locations, running about 1,500 metres in total.
LED lighting is more than a cosmetic upgrade - it draws far less power than the old fixtures, which over the long run means lower bills for the municipality, and therefore for its residents. When a local government invests in energy-efficient infrastructure, it is one of those rare investments that pays for itself over time.
Lit streets are also a matter of safety - both on the road and personal. The dark corners of a neighbourhood are where accidents and thefts cluster, so every new metre of lit street is a metre of added security for anyone walking it after dark.
Projects like this rarely make headlines, and that is exactly why they are worth noting - quiet, useful work at the local level that directly improves everyday life. The question that lingers, as with every initiative of this kind, is whether it will carry on consistently or stall the moment the opening announcement fades. A bright municipality is measured by how many streets stay lit a year from now, not by how many metres got a ribbon cut at the ceremony.
