On May 3, 2023, a pupil at the Vladislav Ribnikar primary school in Belgrade brought a pistol into the school and killed nine children and a security guard. Five more children and one teacher were wounded. The very next day - May 4 - in villages near Mladenovac, Uroš Blažić killed another nine people and wounded thirteen. Two mass killings in two days. That is when Serbia went silent.
Three years on, the situation looks like this: Blažić received the maximum sentence. The Ribnikar killer - a minor, under 14 - cannot be prosecuted under Serbian law. The retrial of his parents continues at the Higher Court in Belgrade, after the appeals court overturned the previous verdicts. The gun, the pistol, the boy walking into the school - all of it was seen, and none of it was stopped.
Today, on the anniversary, Serbia's current prime minister Đuro Macut laid flowers at the memorial. At the same time - someone threw a firecracker during the tribute. Police are investigating. Three years later, the tragedy has neither full justice nor a full answer to the question: why did it happen?
