A medical story out of Bitola the whole region is talking about: a 58-year-old patient, five years into menopause, became pregnant with triplets after in vitro fertilization at the Bitola clinic „Plodnost." An ultrasound at the ninth gestational week confirmed it - all three embryos are viable.
This was the third attempt for the patient, a Serbian citizen, and her husband. The procedure involved preparing the endometrium, donated egg cells and the husband's sperm; three blastocysts were created, and at embryo transfer they were all successfully implanted - all three.
„The years didn't stop the desire for motherhood. When the wish for a child is stronger than every obstacle, medicine and persistence can create incredible stories," announced Dr. Taše Trpčevski. But the same doctor is the first to cool the euphoria: „This is an exceptionally rare and complex case that requires careful monitoring and top-tier multidisciplinary care throughout the entire pregnancy."
The medical reality behind the headline: a triplet pregnancy at 58 is high-risk for both the mother and the embryos. That's why the medical team recommended a reduction to one or two embryos to lower the risks - a decision the patient has yet to make. She plans to continue the procedures in Serbia. „If the patient decides to carry and deliver all three babies at the age of 58, that would truly be an exceptionally rare case," Trpčevski says.
The story is at once an advertisement for what reproductive medicine in Macedonia can do - patients from across the region come to Bitola for procedures like this - and a reminder that every medical miracle comes with fine print. Let the wonder stand; the decisions, thankfully, remain where they belong - with the patient and her doctors.
