Ukrainian units have been ordered to halt combat operations for four days, Ukrainska Pravda reported, citing sources in several brigades on different parts of the front. The pause began at midnight and is meant to last until the end of Tuesday. There is no confirmation from Kyiv. No signature, no statement, no official document - just an order travelling through brigades and journalists reconstructing it from sources.
That is the first thing worth holding on to. Not because it is dubious, but because it shows what a ceasefire nobody wants to name actually looks like. It is not even clear whether the order applies to all units.
Why now
The order came ahead of a visit by American envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Kyiv and Moscow. It is their first visit to Ukraine. Donald Trump confirmed the trip with a sentence that says more than he intends: "This needs to be settled. That's why I sent Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. We sent them to see whether we can achieve something." Moscow first, then Kyiv.
Volodymyr Zelensky, for his part, promised Ukraine would not carry out air strikes on Russia while the envoys are there, for their safety, and asked Moscow to do the same. Before that, the same Zelensky was warning airlines, insurers and foreign governments that Russian airspace would effectively be closed because of Ukrainian drones.
Four days of peace for two other people's biographies
So the silence on the front lasts as long as two Americans' trip. That is brutal arithmetic, but it is accurate. And it shows something the war has hidden for years: the sides know how to lower their weapons when the reason is strong enough. This time the reason is not a humanitarian pause, not a civilian evacuation, not a prisoner exchange. The reason is the safety of two senior guests.
That the halt is not total was shown the same night. After midnight the sirens went off again in Kyiv and the Ukrainian air force warned that drones were approaching the city. The stand-down order clearly does not apply to everything that flies.
What matters in this for a Balkan reader
That peace processes do not start with a signature. They start with informal pauses nobody acknowledges, so everybody can back out if they fail. The Balkans know that by heart - first the rifle is quietly lowered, then there are months of negotiating over what that silence actually meant. Whether Witkoff and Kushner are carrying anything more than a meeting schedule will be seen after Tuesday.
For now the only hard information is that somebody on the Ukrainian front received an order not to fire for four days, and nobody holding an official post wants to sign that order.
