An Albanian Library to Rise Above Skenderbeg Square in Čair: Good Intentions, but for Now Just a Plan

The space above "Skenderbeg" square in Čair is to become a modern Albanian library. The project was announced by the municipality's mayor, Izet Mexhiti, at the closing of the Albanian Book Fair in Skopje - billed as a place for students, researchers and any resident with an interest in education and culture.

According to the announcements, the library will be a multifunctional space with modern conditions for reading, learning and research. Its collection will include literature in Albanian, but also editions in other languages, which would make it accessible to a wider audience. "We are beginning the process of turning the space above Skenderbeg square into a modern library, open to students and all citizens," Mexhiti said.

The idea itself is a good one - any city that builds libraries instead of closing them is heading the right way. Books, whatever the language, are a better investment than plenty of flashier projects. The question that remains is purely practical: what exactly do the architectural plans look like, who will fund it, and when it will be finished.

So it's worth welcoming the intention - and also worth waiting for the delivery. In a country where announcements often outlive the projects themselves, the real measure isn't the press conference but the open doors of a finished building. Until then, one more library in the plans is good news - but only a plan.
