Iran has published a „blacklist“ with the names of Western leaders marked as responsible for the death of its supreme leader - and among them is Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Italian intelligence services immediately opened an investigation over the threats.
The list, published in a newspaper linked to the Tehran city administration, is long and heavy. From the American side it includes Donald Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the defense secretary. From the Israeli side - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the top military command. And from Europe - German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The reason is one: all of them are declared „responsible for the killing of Ali Khamenei“, Iran's supreme leader who died in a US-Israeli strike at the start of the war. The new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, promised revenge with an ominous phrasing: „Soon free people around the world will carry out their part of this divine mission.“
That very sentence is what worries Western services - because it doesn't call on a state, but on „free people around the world“, which in intelligence terms means individuals, lone attackers. Italy is now checking whether the newspaper represents the regime's official policy or just the voice of the hardline wing in Tehran.
Rome for now does not want to cut off diplomatic channels with Iran, which it considers „firm and secure“, but it does not rule out summoning the Iranian ambassador for talks. For Europe, this is a reminder that the Middle East war doesn't stay there - it travels, in the form of threats, fear and security costs, right to the heart of the continent.
