Channels linked to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps published a map of the range of Iranian ballistic missiles and warned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that the entire territory of his country falls within it. The map specifically marks the Khorramshahr-4 missile system, one of the most powerful ballistic missiles in the Iranian arsenal.
Who exactly is threatening - and who is staying quiet
This is worth pausing on, because the distinction is fundamental. The threat of missile strikes has not so far come from the Iranian government, nor from the Defence Ministry, nor from an official representative of the Corps. It came from pro-Iranian media channels, including the outlet that published the map claiming all of Ukraine is within range of Iranian missiles.
That is the difference between a state threat and staged intimidation - and it is exactly what gets lost when headlines are read faster than they are written. The Balkans remember this technique all too well: somebody close to power releases a message the authorities can then own or disown, depending on which pays better that week.
The ship in the Caspian Sea
The message followed a Ukrainian attack on an Iranian merchant ship in the Caspian Sea, in which one crew member was killed and another wounded. Iran's Foreign Ministry said the attack was carried out on the morning of 25 July and described it as an act of aggression and a breach of Article 2, paragraph 4 of the United Nations Charter. A formal protest was delivered to Ukraine's diplomatic representative in Tehran.
Iran warned that moves like this could widen the war further and stressed that it reserves the right to take necessary measures. It also called for a response from the UN Security Council and from European states.
Zelensky had earlier confirmed that Ukrainian forces in the Caspian Sea struck a Russian military vessel and craft used to transport military cargo linked to Iran. Tehran, for its part, describes the hit ship as an Iranian merchant vessel. Both versions cannot be true at once, and no independent party currently has access to the deck.
Two thousand kilometres
The Khorramshahr-4 is an Iranian medium-range ballistic missile, also known as Kheibar. According to figures published by Iran, it can hit a target up to 2,000 kilometres away and carry a warhead weighing up to 1,500 kilograms. Launched from northwestern Iran, that range would allow strikes on targets across Ukraine.
That is what the warning published with the map rests on - although there is no official confirmation that the Iranian leadership has decided on a military response. And this is what makes the front line of 2026 different from every one before it: two conflicts that began separately, thousands of kilometres apart, are now trading ships, drones and maps. When wars start overlapping, distance stops being protection - and the Balkans have always measured that distance shorter than the map suggests.
