The US Embassy in London has issued a public message to its citizens: be extremely careful. The terror threat is rated as „real and credible". On the same day, British authorities raised the national threat level to „severe" - which translated means that an attack is not only possible, it is expected.

The list of targets the Embassy flags is clear: schools, hospitals, churches, tourist sites, train and bus stations, airports. In other words - all the places where people gather in large numbers. From Buckingham Palace to the King's Cross underground - everything is under tightened surveillance.

British police - the British Transport Police and the Metropolitan Police - have increased their presence at critical locations over the past 48 hours. Additional patrols, metal-detector sensors, and - according to part of the media - additional rapid-response teams. London is not panicking, but it is not taking risks.

What is happening here. When an embassy issues this kind of warning, it means two things. First - they have concrete signals from intelligence, otherwise they would not risk a public statement that can be read as panic. Second - the warning is for the protection of their own citizens in the first place, which means the threat is rated as real.

Terror threats in London have been frequent since 2017, but state institutions there have a mechanism that works - warning, preventive action, response. That is not security, that is an infrastructure for managing risk. Here, that is still being learned.

And the question nobody is asking - why now? London is under a warning every time the Middle East burns. And it is no accident that this same week comes with the escalation in Iran. Terror groups linked to territorial conflicts, when they see an opening for a message, come out of the shadows. London has many embassies, many targets, and high symbolic value. That puts it first on the list for an „operation with a message". And that is what the embassy is now publicly warning about.
