EU Approves 90 Billion for Ukraine: The Bill Goes to Russia - Which May Never Pay

The European Council approved the final legislative step for the 90 billion euro package for Ukraine. The money will start flowing soon. On paper - budget assistance and defense industry support. In practice - a loan with strict conditions, including rule of law and anti-corruption measures. So Ukraine will have to meet the same standards that half of the EU itself does not respect?

Cyprus Finance Minister Makis Keravnos stated: "Today the Council approved the final element needed to begin the loan disbursement." The funds will cover Ukraine's most urgent budgetary needs and strengthen its defense industry in 2026 and 2027.

The EU will finance this loan through capital market borrowing, with repayment expected from Russian reparations to Ukraine. So Europe borrows money today and sends the bill to Russia - which may never pay. Simultaneously, the EU adopted its 20th sanctions package against Russia.

Ninety billion euros. A number so large it is hard to fathom. For comparison, Macedonia's entire national budget is around 5 billion euros. The money is for Ukraine, but the bill will be felt by every European taxpayer - including those from the Balkans still waiting at the EU's door.
