Magyar Wins, Orban Ignores Him: New Hungary Begins With a Furious Exit From the Palace

Peter Magyar won the elections on Sunday, and by Tuesday he's already demanding the president's resignation and ignoring Orban. The Tisza party leader wastes no time - literally.

After meeting President Tamas Sulyok at Sandor Palace about forming a government, Magyar stormed out furiously and posted on Facebook: 'Tamas Sulyok must immediately leave his position after the new government is formed.' He called him unworthy of representing national unity and incapable of serving as guardian of constitutional order. A meeting about forming a government that ended with a resignation demand - that's Hungarian politics in 2026.

And the Orban moment? Magyar spotted the old prime minister on the adjacent balcony reading newspapers, waved at him - and Orban kept walking as if he didn't exist. The whole country is laughing, but the message is clear: Orban doesn't acknowledge defeat.

On Kossuth Radio, the interview turned into chaos. Magyar announced shutting down 'propaganda media,' a new media law, investigations into politicians' assets going back 20 years, and VAT cuts on energy. The host interrupted him, he interrupted the host - a classic day one after victory.

Magyar wants the lowest energy prices, hospital development, and a 'new Hungary.' He hasn't spoken with Zelensky yet - says he's formally not yet prime minister. Will he be different from Orban, or end up as yet another Balkan - that is, Central European - leader who promises change but delivers more of the same? We'll find out soon.
