Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski attended a ceremony in Novi Sad marking 80 years since Macedonians settled in Vojvodina - an event that was more about identity and language than day-to-day politics. The message was clear: "A people that guards its roots is never lost, a people that guards its language is never left without a home."
Mickoski stressed the role of the family, the school and cultural institutions in keeping language and traditions alive across generations. He described the Macedonian-Serbian relationship as an example of how a person can build a new home without forgetting their roots, and remain a loyal citizen of the country they live in.
"Human closeness is stronger than divisions, culture is stronger than forgetting," he said, calling for building bridges, not walls, between Balkan peoples. He addressed young Macedonians across Serbian cities in particular, urging them to embrace the modern world without losing the link to their language and heritage.
The Macedonian delegation included a deputy prime minister and several ministers, with the Serbian premier as host, who described relations between the two peoples as familial, not merely diplomatic. Diplomatic ceremonies can be full of nice words that cost nothing - but when it comes to a community that has guarded its language in a foreign country for 80 years, the line about "a people that guards its language" carries a weight that goes beyond protocol.
For the diaspora, events like this are more than a photo op. They are confirmation that the homeland hasn't forgotten. The question that remains, as always, is whether the words from the podium will turn into concrete support for Macedonian communities in the region - schools, books, cultural centers - or stay just a nice sentence for an anniversary.
