Rat Poison in Baby Food: Extortion Scheme Threatens HiPP Across Four Countries

Rat poison in a jar of baby food. Not in a movie - in Austria, in a store, on a shelf. Austrian authorities found rodenticide in a HiPP jar of carrot and potato baby food in the Burgenland region. The product wasn't consumed - but how many parents check jars before opening them?

The case is linked to an extortion scheme against the manufacturer, spanning Germany and Austria. Suspicious jars have also been found in Czech Republic and Slovakia.

How to identify suspicious products

Police are warning parents to watch for: jars with white labels and red circles on the bottom, opened or damaged lids, absence of a vacuum click when opening, or unusual odors. The message is clear: "Never open or give to children" jars showing these signs.

The Spar chain pulled all HiPP products as a precaution, with refunds available without a receipt. When someone is willing to put rat poison in food for babies for money - that's not crime, it's something normal words struggle to describe.
