"I'm not a rapist. I'm not a pedophile. Why are you reading that garbage from a sick person?" - this was the reaction of US President Donald Trump in a CBS interview given after 31-year-old Cole Thomas Allen opened fire at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. The attacker's manifesto contained serious accusations against Trump - and the president had no intention of leaving them unanswered.

"We live in a crazy world," Trump added. Not a word of concern. Not a word of shock. "I wasn't worried. I understand life." That is either exceptional composure or a performance for the public - it is hard to know where the line is with this particular person. The Secret Service agent who was hit in protective gear - "those guys did a good job," Trump said.

What makes the case more significant is the attacker's background. Allen, an engineer and math teacher who graduated from Caltech, was a fierce supporter of Ukraine. Before the attack, he sent a manifesto listing targets - Trump administration officials "from top to bottom." His dissatisfaction intensified as American support for Kyiv diminished. Investigators are examining his connections to Ukrainian fundraising networks.

Trump stated he wants the Correspondents' Dinner to happen again - with a larger security perimeter. That a president literally evacuated under fire wants to maintain the tradition is either courage or something else. One thing is certain: this is the second attack or attempted attack on Trump connected to a Ukraine supporter. Something in the American political atmosphere is wrong.
