A former student entered a secondary school in the city of Siverek, in Shanliurfa province in southeastern Turkey, with a pump-action shotgun and wounded at least 16 people. He then took his own life.

Among the injured: four teachers, ten students, a police officer, and a cafeteria worker. "Fortunately, there are no fatalities," said Governor Hasan Shilpak.

The attacker, born in 2007, was a former student who had attended the school through ninth grade before enrolling in a different secondary school. When he realized police were closing in, he turned the weapon on himself.

Shilpak acknowledged the school had not been classified as high-risk based on its risk assessment and therefore lacked permanent police presence. The motives behind the attack are still under investigation.

He had announced the attack on social media with the message "Get ready." A familiar pattern - manifesto before horror. We always ask after the fact: "Why didn't anyone react?" The answer is always the same: because no one was looking.
