While the world watched the World Cup final, Russia's Ministry of Defence decided to send a message of its own - and it had nothing to do with football. After a combined strike on Kyiv, the Kyiv region, and the Odesa region, Moscow published a photo captioned „Today certainly isn't the final” with the addition: „This isn't football.”
The tone is deliberate. The message isn't military but psychological - designed to show that while some cheer, others hit the gas. It's a scene the Balkans know well: power that wants to be seen, that aims not only at targets but at nerves.
According to the statement, Russian forces claim they hit military-industrial facilities, logistics centres, and fuel depots, allegedly used to produce missiles and drones for the Ukrainian army. In Kyiv, the named targets are the enterprises „Radionix”, „Spetsoboronmash” (part of the „Artem” holding), the „Meridian” plant named after Sergei Korolyov, and „Oakline”. Moscow claims they produce navigation systems and parts for attack drones.
The ministry also flagged an innovation terminal of „Nova Poshta” in Kyiv as a target, claiming that drone components and radio-electronic warfare systems were stored there. A logistics centre in Tarasivka in the Kyiv region was also hit, as were fuel tanks at the „Pivdennyi” port in the Odesa region.
None of these claims can be independently verified - assertions of „high-precision weapons” and „all targets hit” are a standard part of every such statement, no matter which side issues it. That's exactly why caution is worth it: in war, the first casualty is always verifiability.
What remains is the tone. When a state wraps its missiles in a message about a football final, that isn't information - it's a performance. And performances are made for an audience. The only question is whether that audience is sitting in Kyiv, in Moscow, or in front of every screen in the world that waited for the ball and got smoke instead.
